Are they in?

June 18, 2021 By Scott 13 Comments

At Hawaii Nearshore Fishing, we feel strongly against “burning spots” that others have worked hard to find and learn. Photos and videos are edited to not reveal landmarks, and we don’t mention specific locations.

Regarding “where da oama stay?”, our recommendation for oama pro and newbie alike is to walk the likely areas on various tides and times of day and see if the early season oama have come in. If you find them before the word gets out, you’ll have them all to yourself for a few days.

Our prediction is that it will be a “recovery year” for bait fish and papio, much better than last year but not as good as the warm El Nino years. There have been more fruits on the trees than last year, and the early papio season has been better than last year’s, supporting the “recovery” theory. Have fun and be safe.

          Hi Craig,
The well known spots on Oahu may just be getting the first batch now. When are you gonna fish for the oama?

I went today morning and afternoon Scott. Unfortunately they were skiddish due to unruly people who been using nets at one spot on Maui. Seems like the other spots is the same small pile or no oaamas. Past years they would be frenzy out. But then again one spot on Maui started in May. Wow.

              Hi Craig,
Maui is mirroring the action we are having on Oahu. Not much oama in yet, some halalu beginning to pile up, and big papio being caught near deep water.

Hope the real wave of oama come in soon,
              scott

For the first time in my 74 years, I saw a HUGE (1,000’s) school of weke near the shoreline last month. I now see some small schools of oama and am guessing the bite will be on within a couple of weeks.

      Hi Clifford,
Wow, this is incredible news! What island are you on? We haven’t seen large numbers of oama or oama fishers at the well known
      spots on Oahu yet.

      thanks for the report,

Hi Scott Maui only south side have. Bite slowly coming around. Other spots on Maui either slowly coming in or none at all. Funny last year a certain spot was in already. Talk to you soon,Craig.

Thanks for the Maui report Craig. Yeah I saw reports online of lots of oama but haven’t heard of any first hand accounts on Oahu. Normally they come in around the beginning of August. Hope that’s true this year!
