Late, brief oama season has started?

September 14, 2021 By Scott 18 Comments

We’ve been hearing more reports of small schools (less than 300 fish) of oama sighted and beginning to feed fairly well; with papio, some very large, attacking the schools. Normally this occurs by the beginning of August, so the oama schools are really late, but our guess is this is the best it’s gonna be for this year.

      Hey Dean,
Long time no talk, glad you guys are still able to do the summer beach house fishing get together.
I heard that some Windward spots south of where you guys go are holding oama now. Not a lot though, and gotta time it when they’re willing to bite.

      Hi Craig,
Thanks for the Maui report. This time it differs from what we’re seeing on Oahu. On Oahu, it seems like the oama
skipped the south shore and went up to the east side, and the north side. Most oama schools are still small but
there are rumors of some “secret” large school on the east side. Hope you get a papio soon my friend.

Oaama report from Maui. This week big school I mean massive north shore . Friend of mind caught about 40 in 1 hour. Tried dunking today in the pond no luck though 2 omilus chasing school in. Might check Southside tomorrow am early,if not stay Northside and go Southside Wednesday. Water was wavy as tide was up already, this oaamas swimming not settling on the bottom due to wave action.

Thanks for the Maui report Craig. On Oahu, we’re not getting reports of massive schools like that, and the schools that are being fished are still a little skittish.

Hope you get some omilu before the sputtering season ends!

Goodmorning Scott ?. Maui report. North shore seems like there’s less oaamas coming in. Few stick fish, small aholes, etc. Went to the Southside on Tuesday morning, big school oaamas say over 1000. Biting good for 1hr hour half. Then swimming around. No omilus yet,but going to try this Saturday Southside see what’s happening. ?. Though hopeful Northside still have, when I was there omilus chasing oaamas in decent school. Be safe my friend!

Thanks Craig. Main thing, stock up on oama and use em year round. Our south side still doesn’t have much oama, don’t think it will.

Northshore no oaamas. Southside still have plenty. Looks like smaller ones coming in now. Maybe third wave coming in. School is still big yet. Stickfish coming in also.

Interesting that this year Maui differed from Oahu in that you guys had oama on the Southside and we didn’t get much. Keep catching those oama and stock piling them!

I know rather strange Oahu Southside. Anyway central Maui,North shore no reports of oaamas. Southside still going strong. Fisherman told me the other day like about 1,000 of oaamas. Big school today. Looks like going be running through this month. This fisherman I talked to caught a Kagami North shore about 20#.

Guys are still seeing very small oama but not so much at the regular Oahu south shore spots. Papio still hitting baits and lures though, so the season isn’t over!
