Big Island and Maui had oama for awhile. I haven’t heard about the other islands. But it sounds like the oama are finally coming into Oahu. The piles are small and the oama are still the tiny ones that swam in from the deep water, but hopefully these early oama will be followed by waves of more oama like what happened last fall.
If you’re not ready for oama season you might want to pick up the latest Lawai’a magazine available on new stands now. There’s a pretty comprehensive article that covers the gear you need, where to find oama, how to catch them, how to keep ’em alive and how to use ’em for bait. Ok, sorry for the self-promotion but the article might help you make the most of the oama catching opportunities in what may be a short season.

Scott thanks for the pointers on keeping the oama alive. Using your set up I have been able to keep at least a few oama alive since Monday. Only a few because the rest were bait. One even turned into a nice 8 # papio for me. I would concur that here on Kauai as well the oama are here but the numbers are light thus far.

Holy smokes, an 8lb papio? Was it an omilu or white? What an awesome catch on live oama. Thanks for the Kauai report.

It was a white papio.
i see that famous goatmaster is the coverboy on your story. i need to ask him
for tips.
I think you were the goat whisperer that day, channeling the oamas to bite.
Where da oama stay on Oahu??? BWAHAHA
Oaama last week camp 1 report. Crazy all week long big school, kanaha rivermouth morningtime today biting good. Camp 1 today all day long biting. Omilu small boy hookup 5lb fish. Papio chasing after Oaama goes between feet of people. And reminiscent of last year.
Been catching Oama from beginning July. And will continue til oct 2016. Just like the previous years…secret spot 🙂
That’s a great secret spot. Hopefully our spots which recently are holding oama, will have for a few awhile. Thanks.
