Poll Results: 2020 Shoreline Season – how good was it?

October 3, 2020 By Scott 5 Comments

Based on the 39 participants who participated in the poll, only 1/3 said it was about the same as previous years. Just 5% did better than previous years and more than 60% complained that this year was slower than previous years.

Why? For sure it’s bait availability was a factor. There were less bait fish, including oama, near shore, so the preds didn’t risk coming so close to all the people traipsing in the water. And yes, there were more traipsers due to the shutdowns of many businesses.

There’s a strong possibility that the fact that this is the first season after an El Nino, which caused reduced rainfall and slightly cooler water and air temps, made it difficult for baitfish production.

It’s not like the papio died off and are permanently gone though. We’re catching much more papio in deeper water than we normally do. I guess they’re foraging for food out there.

Shoreline Season survey to close at the end of September

September 23, 2020 By Scott 2 Comments

If you fished from shore in Hawaii this season and haven’t participated in the poll asking how the season was for you, please place your vote before the end of this month. Your participation is completely anonymous and helps us get a better understanding of how the fishing went in this Post-El Nino year.

Much Mahalo!

Poll Results So Far: How’s the 2020 shoreline season going for you so far?

September 1, 2020 By Scott 3 Comments

2 weeks into running the poll, with 37 people participating, about 1/3 said the season is about the same as previous seasons for them. Almost 2/3 said it’s been slower than previous years and just 5% said it’s actually been better than previous years.

Do you agree with these prelim poll results? If you haven’t voted, please do. We’ll run the poll through the month of September, ending at the traditional ending of the summer season.

Poll: How’s the 2020 shoreline season going for you so far?

August 19, 2020 By Scott 6 Comments

We have been getting reports that oama came in, but came in late, and there had been a lot of people fishing from shore since it was one of the few allowed activities. With standing on the beach currently prohibited, accessible fishing spots have been reduced.

It’s peak fishing season now and we’d like to know how’re you’re doing. Thanks for participating.

Poll Results: How’s your papio season going so far?

October 11, 2019 By Scott Leave a Comment

We didn’t get a lot of participants, with only 28 voting, but that was enough to see some trends.

Almost half felt that this season was slower than the previous really good El Nino years. A quarter felt they did better really well and the other quarter felt the season was about average.

I think those that caught knew where and when to fish for papio. The hammahs always put in the time and adapt!

Thank you to those that participated!

Poll: How’s your papio season going so far?

September 20, 2019 By Scott 2 Comments

It’s mid-September and there’s still oama in the shallows if you know where to look. We’re not seeing as many oama and papio fishers though. How has the season been for you so far?

Poll Results: For Shoreline Fishers

May 10, 2019 By Scott Leave a Comment

Thank you to those who participated and helped us understand our audience a little better.

Most of the poll participants fish even when it’s not oama season, finding other fish to target.

Presumably, good size papio is the most popular nearshore target species, so taking that out of the choices, you guys rather catch a screamer oio than a trophy size kaku.

The vast majority of you either just whip, or dunk and whip. Less than 20% just dunk and chill.

And if you’re fighting a hard fighting fish and buss line, more than half of you are just stoked to have had the experience of hooking and fighting such a good fish. A third quickly shake it off and try again. 10% throw a mini tantrum and were honest about that!

You can see the poll results stats here.

Poll Results: What type of fishing are you most interested in reading?

July 18, 2018 By Scott Leave a Comment

The purpose of this poll was to find out the one type of nearshore fishing you’re most interested in reading about.  Granted, most of you are interested in more than one type, but given only one choice, what would that be?

The results are pretty clear.  Shoreline whipping and dunking had more votes than all the other choices combined. We may have to recruit more Holoholo writers to keep a constant flow of those type of posts coming.  Please let us know if you’re interested in sending in your fish photo and short story.

Here are the poll results. Thank you to those that voted.

Will leave this up for a few weeks.  Thanks for participating!

Poll Results: How much would you pay for a great nearshore lure?

April 7, 2017 By Scott 6 Comments

This poll ran for 3 weeks. There were a total of 38 votes.

42% would pay up to $20 for a great, game changing nearshore lure.
21% would pay ANY amount for such an effective lure.
18% would pay up to $15 for that game changer.
8% would pay up to $30 for that lure.

Only 11% would stop at $10 for a lure that could possibly change the outcome of their fishing day.

So of the folks really nuts about whipping like I am, most would pony up some big money for a consistent, dependable fish catcher.  Thanks for helping me understand the demand for a lure that works really well in Hawaii’s nearshore waters.

Here’s the detailed poll results.

Poll: How much would you pay for a great nearshore lure?

March 18, 2017 By Scott 7 Comments

Friends and I have been fishing Japan Domestic Model (JDM) lures not sold in the US.  They’re a little more expensive than US lures, and we had to pay international shipping to get them. Still, by finding sales on new and used lures, most of the items cost between $10 and $18 including shipping to Hawaii.  The “winners” cast further and swam better than the rest, and caught fish at an astonishing rate.

I’d love to know what’s the most you’d pay for a game changing nearshore lure.  If you don’t fish with lures, no need vote!

Thanks!
scott

(3/29/17) After 11 days, with 31 people voting, 12 would pay up to $20 for a great nearshore lure, 7 would pay any amount for a game changing lure, and 5 would pay up to $15.  I’m guessing that the rest of the readers aren’t nearshore lure chuckers.  Thank you to those that voted. I’ll keep the poll opened a little while longer.

Poll Results: How do you feel about Top Water fishing?

October 19, 2016 By Scott Leave a Comment

Thank you for letting me know how you feel about my recent Top Water posts.  Of those that participated, most didn’t mind reading about that type of fishing so I’ll continue posting about my Top Water addiction.  It’s just so much fun watching fish explode on these lures in shallow water.

I’ll try to work in other fishing methods, partly by necessity since the inshore papio season is quickly coming to an end.

Here’s the poll results.

Poll: How do you feel about Top Water fishing?

October 5, 2016 By Scott 7 Comments

Just wanted to know how relevant and helpful the recent Top Water posts have been.  Please let me know if you’ve been anxiously awaiting the next Top Water post or groaning because you think Top Water fishing should be limited to bass fishing on a freshwater lake.

Poll Results: Summer nearshore fishing is picking up, what kind of fishing are you doing?

August 31, 2015 By Scott Leave a Comment

The poll ran through the month of August to determine how readers of this blog are fishing during the peak nearshore season.  Because multiple activities could be chosen, the computed percentages are meaningless but if you look at the number of votes per activity, certain activities stand out.

93 participants were fishing for predators without the use of oama/halalu/sardines.  Compared to the 64 participants who were fishing for predators using the oama/halalu/sardines.  Almost all of fin bait users were using oama since 62 participants were fishing for oama, whereas only 20 were fishing for halalu.

81 participants were whipping.  14 of those participants were whipping the Waxwing.

I don’t think this reflects how the general fishing public in Hawaii fishes. It’s more a reflection of the fishers who read the whipping and oama trolling and oama fishing posts contained within.

Thanks so much for participating in the poll.  Click here to see the final results.

Poll Closed: Summer nearshore fishing is picking up, what kind of fishing are you doing?

August 1, 2015 By Scott 1 Comment

August is here and the bait fish are finally in.  Predators are cruising the reef. What kind of fishing are you doing during this peak time?

Last summer I ran a poll  and there was moderate participation because the blog was new.  Most of the folks that voted were either just fishing for fun, or avid fishermen not using oama.  This summer I’m interesting in getting a better idea of what fishing activities you guys are involved in. Please select all the activities you’re pursuing currently, and sorry, this is limited to fishing in the Hawaiian Islands.  If your activities change you can vote again a week later.

Thanks so much for participating!

Poll Results: Do you time your fishing with Solar/Lunar Activity charts?

May 31, 2015 By Scott Leave a Comment

This poll couldn’t have worked out any better.  It ran for a month, the same duration as the last poll that ran last year, and there were 95 votes tallied.  That’s 3 times the participation as last year’s.  The poll prevented voters from voting more in a week’s span, so I’m assuming most of the voters voted only once.  Thanks for participating !

It was very close between fishers who checked the tides and didn’t worry too much about solunar activity, and fishers who just fished when they had some free time.  In the end, 45% were tide fishers and 40% fished when they could regardless of tide and solunar activity.  10% thought the solunar activity charts were bogus, and 5% strictly fished during high solunar activity.

To decide for myself whether there’s truth to solunar activity, I downloaded an Android app called Fishing Calendar, which displays high and low activity for a month at a time.  I’m gonna try to fish the high activity periods to see if I do better than I have been doing.

Stay tuned for those fishing reports and more polls.

Poll Closed: Do you time your fishing with Solar/Lunar Activity charts?

April 29, 2015 By Scott 4 Comments

It seems like there are far more fishers out when the sun and moon align,  causing greater tidal swings, than when the tides and sun/moon phases are not optimal.

I’d like to know how much you adjust your fishing times based on these “solunar” activity predictions.

Thanks for participating!

Note:

(5/22/15) After 3 weeks and a total of 70 votes, it’s still neck and neck between those that check the tides but don’t worry about the solunar activity too much, and those that fish when time allows.  The poll will close at the end of May. Get your vote in!

(5/5/15) In less than a week there have been 33 responses to this poll.  14 check the tides but don’t worry about the solunar activity so much, another 14 just fish when they have the time.  Just 2, so far, only fish when the activity is high.  To see how others have responded, click the “View Results” link on the poll.

Poll closed, what kind of fisherpeople read this blog?

August 17, 2014 By Scott 2 Comments

The poll has been closed after a month.  The results are interesting.  With the sample of 31 participants, it was a dead tie for first place.

9 were “avid fisherfolks not using oama for bait” and 9 were “casual fisherfolks out for fun in the sun”.

Of the remaning participants, 6 were “avid fisherfolks who had success using oama for bait”, 5 were folks fishing vicariously through the blog, and 2 were the rare honest fisherfolks who admitted not having much success fishing oama so far.

Given the relatively small number of participants, we can’t draw definite conclusions but I was surprised to see so many non-oama fisherfolks participating during this epic oama season.  Maybe because it’s so time consuming to catch oama, keep them alive, and then use them before they expire?

Thank you so much for participating in the poll.  Stay tuned for another one soon.

Poll: What kind of Nearshore Fisherperson are you?

July 17, 2014 By Scott 2 Comments

The page views on this blog increased almost 10 fold since the summer fishing season has arrived.  Judging from the search criteria that brought folks to this blog, a lot of you are interested in oama fishing.

I’m very curious to know what type of fishing you do. If you’re using oama for bait, have you been successful this season? I haven’t been.  So far it seems that only kaku are interested in chopping my bait up and cutting my line.

Please participate in this poll.  There’s no way to track you and you won’t be spammed.  I’m hoping to get a feel for who reads my blog and how the summer fishing is going.

If you have any specific comments to provide, please get in touch with me through the Contact page.  Thanks!

Update: Poll closed after a month. Thanks for participating!  For poll results, click here.
