It’s on! Oama biting, papio being caught, inshore and nearshore beginning to go off!

Caught an hour ago!

Breaking News: At the start of the 2nd week of August, the reports are coming in. Oama are showing up in all the usual places and beginning to bite fairly well. It already looks like a better oama year than last year.

Early season papio are being caught with the oama and the papio bite will probably get even better in the weeks to come.

Juvenile mid-depth fish like weke nono / weke ula are showing up, and the kayak guys had a really good day Westside with the kawakawa and small mahi. Lots of annoying kawalea (deep water cudas) and aha (needlefish) are swarming the offshore baits too.

All these seem to signal that the SEASON IS ON!!!

I’d love to take my kids oama fishing near where we live. Any chance there’s oama by Heeia Pier? Or anyplace else on the Windward side?

      Hi Skylark,
Usually the oama swim into the Windward side after they settle into the South side of Oahu but they’re up on that side and biting at all the normal spots, our Oama Scout has reported. Get ‘um while they last!

      Hi Roy,
Sorry, my reports are coming from Oahu. But normally Maui gets their oama before Oahu so I bet Maui’s
      spots are holding.

      Good luck,

I hear they pile up over at Sugar Cove in Paia, near the rocks. My friend keeps saying I should take my son there to catch some.

Hi Scott report from Maui. All spots from what I’ve been hearing get plenty oaamas. Report says as soon as you put the lead in don’t wait till it drops to the sand,it’s to late to catch um. Catch them on the way up. Also heard reports or papios being caught. All over the island, looks like going to be a good year for oaamas.?

Try Kanaha Beach Park,Kahului after the bridge. Or Stable Road last entrance.

      Hey Dean,
Glad you were able to get the oama and good size omilus at your north shore spot. Been hearing that lots of the regular spots getting oama now. Still not real big schools but catchable. Haven’t got a specific report for our old spot but the spot before and after have had oama caught. Hope it holds for your Mid Sept trip!
